Validating Digital Asset Opportunities
Markdown--- name: validating-digital-asset-opportunities description: Validates printable/digital asset product ideas before creation using search telemetry, buyer review mining, marketplace saturation metrics, and unit-economic thresholds instead of subjective scoring. Use when evaluating whether to create a new printable, planner, template, or similar digital product, or when auditing an existing product idea for market viability before investing in design/generation work. --- # Validating Digital Asset Opportunities (T-DAV Framework) Truth-Anchored Digital Asset Validation: replaces macro proxies and subjective scoring with direct marketplace telemetry and hard financial gates. A product idea must pass all four sequential gates before generation work begins.
Given a product idea (e.g., "ADHD daily planner printable"), run it through four gates in order. Stop immediately at the first failure — do not proceed to later phases on a failed gate.
Phase 1: Search Demand → MSV >= 1,500 + stable/positive velocity?
Phase 2: Buyer Friction → 3 structural fixes identified from reviews?
Phase 3: Saturation → DLR >= 0.5 and Top-3 concentration < 70%?
Phase 4: Unit Economics → Net Margin >= 60% AND Net Profit/conversion >= $2.50?
ALL PASS → proceed to Phase 5 (Asset Generation Brief)
ANY FAIL → NO-GO, document reason, do not generate asset
Progress:
- Phase 1: Verify micro-demand via search telemetry
- Phase 2: Extract buyer friction from competitor reviews
- Phase 3: Audit marketplace saturation
- Phase 4: Apply unit-economic logic gate
- Phase 5: Produce asset generation brief (only if Phases 1-4 pass)
Phase 1 — Micro-Demand Verification
Use marketplace-specific tools (Marmalead, eRank) and Google Keyword Planner — never public stock performance or category tailwind narratives as a proxy.
- Pull Monthly Search Volume (MSV): exact-match, transactional queries only.
- Pull 3-Month Search Velocity: % change in query volume over trailing 90 days.
- Discard informational queries ("how to plan my day"). Keep transactional queries ("printable daily planner template").
Logic Gate:
- PASS: Combined exact MSV >= 1,500 AND velocity stable or positive.
- FAIL: MSV < 1,500 OR velocity declining > 20% YoY. → Stop. Record as NO-GO.
Phase 2 — Buyer Friction & Intent Extraction
Scrape 1–3 star reviews from the top 5 best-selling competing assets (Etsy + Amazon). Do not substitute general behavioral-economics literature.
Categorize complaints into three buckets:
- Usability Gaps — margins, font legibility, ink-heavy backgrounds, uneditable fields.
- Structure Gaps — missing layout sections (weekly summary, habit tracker, etc.).
- Technical Gaps — wrong paper size (A4 vs US Letter), missing hyperlinks in digital planners.
Required artifact: Feature Differentiation Spec — exactly 3 structural fixes directly traceable to buyer complaints. If fewer than 3 clear, recurring complaints exist across the sample, gather more reviews before proceeding.
Phase 3 — Marketplace Saturation & Competition Audit
Use dedicated marketplace analyzers (Alura, EverBee, SellerApp) — not generic AI scan tools.
Calculate:
- Total Active Listings targeting the exact long-tail search string.
- Competitor Concentration Ratio — % of monthly sales owned by top 3 storefronts.
- Demand-to-Listing Ratio (DLR) = MSV / Total Active Listings.
- Check listing age of top converters — new entrant friendly vs. entrenched authority.
Logic Gate:
- Low Saturation (Go): DLR >= 1.5 AND Top-3 concentration < 50%.
- Moderate Saturation (Conditional Go): DLR 0.5–1.4 → requires the Phase 2 Feature Differentiation Spec to be genuinely differentiating.
- High Saturation (NO-GO): DLR < 0.5 OR Top-3 concentration > 70%. → Stop.
Phase 4 — Unit-Economic Financial Logic Gate
No subjective point scoring. Compute real numbers.
Net Margin per Unit = AOV - Platform Fees - (CPC / Conversion Rate)
- AOV: target retail price (e.g., $4.99).
- Platform Fees: ~$0.45 + 6.5% (Etsy-style) or actual Shopify fee structure.
- CPC: estimated sponsored search cost for primary keywords from Phase 1.
- CR: baseline 2.0% unless better data exists — do not inflate optimistically.
Logic Gate:
- GO: Net Margin per Unit >= 60% of AOV AND Net Profit per conversion >= $2.50.
- NO-GO: Net Margin < 60% — ad costs/fees will erode profitability regardless of demand or differentiation.
Phase 5 — Asset Generation Brief (only after all gates pass)
Package verified parameters into a generation-ready brief:
- Keyword Tagging: exact high-volume terms from Phase 1 → title, tags, file metadata.
- Friction-Resolution Specs: explicitly state the 3 structural fixes from Phase 2 as generation requirements.
- Format Specs: print dimensions, CMYK vs RGB, margin padding, PDF accessibility (tagged PDF, editable fields if applicable).
Example 1: Input: "Minimalist habit tracker PDF" — MSV 2,100, velocity +15%/90 days. Output: Phase 1 PASS. Proceed to review mining. Top complaints: ink-heavy backgrounds, no monthly rollup, A4-only sizing. Feature spec: (1) low-ink/outline design, (2) add monthly summary page, (3) ship both A4 and US Letter. DLR = 2,100/900 = 2.33, Top-3 concentration 38% → Low Saturation, Go. AOV $3.99, fees $0.45+6.5%, CPC $0.35, CR 2% → Net Margin per unit = $3.99 - $0.71 - $17.50 = -$14.22 → Phase 4 FAIL. Final decision: NO-GO — demand and differentiation are strong but paid acquisition economics are unviable at this price point; either raise AOV, rely on organic-only distribution, or abandon.
Example 2: Input: "ADHD daily planner printable" — MSV 980. Output: Phase 1 FAIL (MSV < 1,500). NO-GO. Stop before Phase 2; document insufficient demand as reason. Recommend broadening or respecifying keyword before re-testing.
- Always use transactional, exact-match search data — never informational query volume or category-level industry trends as a demand proxy.
- Pull reviews from actual top-selling competitors, not a random sample; friction patterns must be traceable to real purchase behavior.
- Treat DLR and concentration ratio together — high DLR with extreme concentration still signals a hard-to-crack market.
- Run Phase 4 math with conservative CR (2.0% baseline) unless you have verified, better first-party data.
- Stop at the first failed gate. Do not let strong performance in one phase compensate for failure in another — gates are sequential, not averaged.
- Keep the Feature Differentiation Spec to exactly 3 items — forces prioritization on the highest-frequency, highest-impact complaints.
- Don't substitute public company stock performance (Etsy, Cimpress) for localized search demand — macro and micro signals diverge.
- Don't use academic/behavioral synthesis tools in place of actual scraped buyer reviews — only real purchasers' complaints count as friction signal.
- Don't use generic AI market-scan tools for saturation checks — they lack real listing/sales velocity data; use dedicated marketplace scrapers.
- Don't replace the unit-economics gate with a point-based scorecard — financial viability is binary math, not subjective weighting.
- Don't proceed to asset generation (Phase 5) if any gate fails, even if the idea "feels" promising.
- Don't use an optimistic conversion rate to force a GO on Phase 4 — use the conservative baseline unless verified otherwise.
