Mining Social Replies for Startup Ideas
Mining Social Replies for Startup Ideas
Find what people are already begging for, build an audience around solving it for free, then charge only once demand is proven.
Step 1: Find 20 startups that raised seed rounds 3-9 months ago (exclude <3mo old raises)
Step 2: Filter to 5 that sell to the same customer persona
Step 3: Pull founders' last 100 posts on X, extract every unanswered question from replies
Step 4: Turn the top 10 recurring questions into content (no product pitch, tag the startup)
Step 5: Track bookmarks/follow-up replies over 30 days, double down on what pulls people in
Step 6: Build ONE free tool for the most common problem
Step 7: DM your 20 heaviest users a paid feature pitch — 5+ yes = build it
Target: $10/mo x 100 users = $1k MRR
Progress:
- Step 1: Source 20 seed-stage startups (3-9 months post-raise)
- Step 2: Narrow to 5 with overlapping customer base
- Step 3: Scrape founders' last 100 posts + all replies
- Step 4: Extract unanswered questions into a sheet (question, asker, phrasing, context)
- Step 5: Categorize into: alt-seekers, price complaints, feature gaps ("does it do X"), churned/stuck users
- Step 6: Rank top 10 recurring questions by frequency
- Step 7: Create one content piece per question (video demo, pricing comparison, template) — product-free, tag original startup and any better alternative
- Step 8: Publish daily for 30 days
- Step 9: Measure bookmarks > likes, follow-up replies, template usage, new-visitor sourcing
- Step 10: Kill dead topics, double down on winners
- Step 11: Build one free tool for the top problem; link in bio, seed it into relevant threads
- Step 12: Collect feedback from free tool users on next-step gaps
- Step 13: DM top 20 users a paid feature (price + 2-line pitch)
- Step 14: 5+ yes → build and ship. <5 → re-price or re-scope, don't assume it's dead
Step 3 Detail: Extracting Questions
For each founder, go through the last 100 posts and their reply threads:
- Record every question asked by someone who is NOT the founder
- Skip any question the founder already replied to — those are already handled
- Capture exact wording (this becomes your marketing copy later)
- Tag each with a category: alternative-seeking / pricing-complaint / feature-gap / onboarding-dropoff
Step 4 Detail: Content Without the Pitch
Match content format to question type:
- "Can tool X do Y?" → 30-second screen recording of you doing Y
- Pricing complaints → side-by-side cost breakdown of 5 alternatives at real usage tiers
- Workflow confusion → free template or mini-guide
- Multi-tool workaround needed → document the chain; this becomes your Step 6 tool's blueprint
- Always tag the original startup — if it helps their users, they reshare, and you inherit their audience
Step 5 Detail: Signal Over Vanity Metrics
Ranked by weight:
- Follow-up questions in replies (highest intent)
- Template/tool usage (demonstrated action)
- Bookmarks (intent to return)
- New-to-you accounts engaging (audience expansion)
- Likes (lowest signal, ignore for decisions)
Example 1: Input: Founder's replies show 14 people over 3 months asking "does this integrate with Notion?" — founder never answered any of them. Output: Record a 30-sec clip showing a manual workaround connecting the tool to Notion via Zapier. Post it tagging the startup. Log "Notion integration" as a top-10 recurring theme and a candidate for the free tool in Step 6.
Example 2: Input: Multiple replies say "$49/mo is steep for a solo founder" across 3 different startups in the same niche. Output: Build a pricing comparison post showing total cost (with add-ons) across 5 tools in that category at solo-founder usage levels. This becomes content piece #1; the pricing-sensitivity segment becomes a target customer profile for the eventual paid feature.
- Keep the free tool scoped to exactly one problem — resist expanding scope before you have paying users
- Use the asker's exact phrasing in your content titles/hooks; it's pre-validated language-market fit
- Tag generously (startups, better alternatives) — this is free distribution, not charity
- Price the paid feature low and test fast via DM, not a landing page
- Treat "fewer than 5 yes" as a pricing/scoping signal, not a "the idea is dead" signal
- Don't build anything before Step 6 — content and free tools come before any paid product
- Don't count likes as validation — they're the weakest signal in this system
- Don't answer questions the founder already addressed — you're filling gaps, not duplicating support
- Don't skip the 30-day waiting period before building the free tool — you need the signal data first
- Don't pitch the paid feature broadly before DMing your heaviest users directly
