Curating Financial Events

For a target city (e.g., "Toronto") and its region (e.g., "Ontario"/"Canada"):

  1. Pull all events scoped to the city/region — no filtering needed, include everything finance/fintech-related.
  2. Pull country-wide events (national conferences, virtual summits, events in other major cities) — apply a worthiness filter and keep only the top-tier ones.
  3. Merge into a single list, tagged by scope (local vs national), sorted by date.

Progress:

  • Define the target city + region + country
  • Identify sources (see below)
  • Scrape/collect all local-scope events (no filter)
  • Scrape/collect country-scope events (raw list)
  • Apply worthiness filter to country-scope events
  • Deduplicate (an event can appear in multiple sources)
  • Tag each event with scope + worthiness score
  • Output combined, sorted list

1. Identify Sources

Default source types to check, in priority order:

  • Event aggregators: Eventbrite, Meetup, Luma — filter by location + finance/fintech category
  • Exchange/regulator calendars: local stock exchange, central bank, financial regulator "events" or "press" pages
  • Industry associations: fintech associations, CFA society chapters, banking associations (city chapter = local; national body = country-scope)
  • Conference organizers: Finovate, Money20/20, Sibos, local fintech weeks — these are almost always country/international scope
  • University/accelerator calendars: local business schools, fintech accelerators/incubators (local scope)
  • News/PR: search "[city] fintech event" and "[country] financial conference 2025" on Google News, LinkedIn Events
  • Coworking/VC hosted: local VC firms and coworking spaces often host finance-focused meetups (local scope)

2. Local Scope = No Filter

Any event physically located in, or specifically organized for, the target city/region goes in. Include small meetups, panels, workshops — comprehensiveness matters more than prestige here.

3. Country Scope = Apply Worthiness Filter

For events outside the city but within the country, only keep ones meeting at least 2 of these criteria:

  • Attendance > 500 or explicitly marketed as "national"/"flagship"
  • Speakers include C-level execs from major banks/fintechs, regulators, or well-known VCs
  • Covered by major financial press (Bloomberg, Reuters, local equivalent) beforehand or historically
  • Organized by a recognized industry body or top-tier conference brand
  • Has had 3+ prior editions (established, not a one-off)

Score each country-scope event 0-5 against these criteria; keep score ≥ 2.

4. Deduplicate & Tag

{
  "name": "...",
  "date": "...",
  "city": "...",
  "scope": "local" | "national",
  "worthiness_score": null | 0-5,
  "source": "..."
}
Recommendation▾
Clarify how to handle ties or borderline worthiness scores (exactly 2) and what 'virtual/hybrid' national events look like in the tagged output schema.
14 / 20

Example 1: Input: City = Austin, Region = Texas, Country = USA Output:

  • Local (all included): "Austin Fintech Meetup #42", "UT Austin Blockchain Club Panel", "Capital Factory Demo Day – Fintech Cohort"
  • National (filtered, score ≥2 only): "Money20/20 USA (Las Vegas)" ✅ score 5, "Finovate Fall (NYC)" ✅ score 4 — excluded: "Regional Payments Meetup (Denver)" ❌ score 1

Example 2: Input: City = Lagos, Region = Lagos State, Country = Nigeria Output:

  • Local: all Lagos fintech meetups, Central Bank of Nigeria Lagos branch sessions, local hackathons
  • National: "Nigeria Fintech Week" ✅ score 5 kept; a one-off "Abuja SME Finance Mixer" ❌ score 1 excluded
Recommendation▾
Add guidance on output format/delivery (e.g., calendar entry, markdown table) since the skill is meant to feed a newsletter/dashboard, not just an internal JSON list.
  • Always confirm whether an event is virtual/hybrid — virtual events nominally "national" may need separate handling (treat as national, apply filter).
  • Re-check worthiness scores yearly; a new conference can earn trust after repeat editions.
  • Keep local inclusion generous — the value of this skill is hyper-local comprehensiveness contrasted with curated national signal.
  • Record the source and scoring rationale for each national event so filtering is auditable.
  • Don't apply the worthiness filter to local events — that defeats the purpose of full local coverage.
  • Don't assume "held in capital city" = automatically worthy; score it like any other country-scope event.
  • Don't skip deduplication — large national events often get cross-posted by multiple local chapters.
  • Don't rely on a single aggregator; regulator/association sites catch events Eventbrite/Meetup miss.
