Step 0: Permission and Inputs

Ask the permission question verbatim if not already authorized for this stage.
Confirm you have: verified owned assets, legal/former/legacy names, acquired-brand and imprint names, primary and inherited domains, and the cutoff date.
Do not assume every owned asset publishes ebooks. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Step 1: Build Publisher-Name Variants

For each asset, generate:

Current legal/publisher name
Former or legacy names
Abbreviations and common shorthand
Imprint names
Plausible "[Name] Publications," "[Name] Publishing," "[Name] Press" variants — only when evidence supports them (e.g., known imprint conventions, domain patterns)
Domain and email-domain patterns as identity clues (not proof)

Step 2: First OverDrive Discovery Pass

For each asset and each variant, searched separately (never only the parent company):

Combine name/variant with OverDrive, publisher, ebooks, EPUB
Try site:overdrive.com/publishers/ "Publisher Name" style queries
Check direct /publishers/ result pages
Follow publisher links from relevant ebook title pages found in search results

Step 3: Verify Each Candidate (Publisher-to-Title Check)

For every candidate publisher page:

Open the direct publisher page.
Open one or more representative title pages linked from it.
Confirm the title's Publisher field names the candidate — not just a mention in title, author, subject, or description.
Confirm at least one relevant title shows EPUB as an available format.
Match the publisher's identity to a currently owned asset using ownership/identity evidence (legal name match, domain match, known imprint relationship, credible corporate record) — not just a plausible name resemblance.

A candidate only becomes "verified" when all of these pass.

Step 4: Mandatory Second Pass

Always run this, even if Step 2–3 found nothing:

Re-search using alternate legal, legacy, imprint, and domain/name combinations not yet tried
Follow publisher links from additional/different title pages
Review similarly named publisher records for a possible missed match
Verify any newly found record using the Step 3 method

Step 5: New Leads and False Positives

If a publisher record surfaces a company/brand/imprint not on the verified asset list, treat it as a lead only.
Verify current ownership before treating it as a confirmed asset.
Once verified as currently owned, search its publisher variants within this same authorized stage.
Exclude explicitly:
- Unrelated namesakes
- Minority holdings without control
- Joint ventures the target doesn't control
- Divested/formerly owned assets
- Any record supported only by a book mentioning the company

Step 6: Keep Distinct Genuine Records

If OverDrive has separate pages for a current-name and legacy-name publisher, and each independently passes the Step 3 check, retain both — label each clearly (current-name record / legacy-name record).
Deduplicate repeated links pointing to the same publisher record.
Never treat a large title count on a publisher page as EPUB proof — always verify format at the individual title level.

Step 7: Report and Pause

Produce the report format below, then ask permission before starting any further research category.

Add one sentence stating what the mandatory recheck (Step 4) specifically found (even if "no additional records").

If no asset produces a verified record at all, state this briefly in prose. Do not add an empty EPUB section to the consolidated master table unless the user explicitly requests it.
Never state an asset "publishes no ebooks" — only that no verified OverDrive record was found as of the cutoff date.

This does not confirm the asset has no ebook publishing activity — only that no verified record was found as of [cutoff date]." (No table row is added to the consolidated master table for this asset unless requested.)

Best Practices

Always search acquisitions/brands individually — parent-company-only searches miss imprint-level publisher records.
Treat domain/email patterns as corroborating clues only, never standalone proof.
Always perform the second pass, even after a strong first-pass result — omissions are common with legacy/imprint names.
Prefer direct /publishers/ URLs over generic search result links in the final report.
When uncertain about ownership of a newly discovered publisher lead, say so explicitly rather than guessing.

Common Pitfalls

**Essential assumptions:**
- A verified master asset list (names, aliases, domains, ownership status, cutoff date) is supplied by an earlier workflow stage and treated as ground truth for ownership checks.
- The agent has live web/search access to OverDrive and library-hosted OverDrive subdomains.
- "Currently owned" excludes divested, minority-stake, and non-controlled joint-venture entities per the verified register.
